EXPECTATIONS
Research performed at North Carolina State University, Brigham Young University, and the University of California, Irvine finds that parental involvement is a more significant factor in a child's academic success than the qualities of the school itself. We believe that “what matters most in a child’s development is not how much information we can stuff into his or her brain in the first few years. What matters, instead, is whether we are able to help her develop a very different set of qualities, a list that includes persistence, self-control, curiosity, conscientiousness, grit, and self-confidence” Paul Tough. There are several things families can do at home to help their child develop these qualities.
1. Read together and read often.
2. Share a meal together.
3. Let your child experience real-life by participating with you doing household chores like cooking, shopping, gardening, etc.
4. Limit screen time including tablets, television, phones and YouTube.
5. Answer your child’s questions. If you are not sure of the answer, involve your child in the process of finding it using books or the internet.
6. Talk, sing, and play pretend with your child.
7. Discover what interests your child and learn about it together.
8. Encourage your child to eat healthy foods and keep active.
9. Allow your child to try a variety of ways to solve a problem before solving it for them.
10. Be silly, laugh, and have fun!
